Cities Becoming Popular Sites for Boomer Senior Living

If Americans have traditionally sought secluded leisure in retirement, this trend is soon to change. These days, newly revitalized urban areas attract empty nesters almost as much as young professionals. The word "retirement" has certain connotations. When a great athlete's jersey is "retired" it is taken out of action, and to some degree the idea persists that a person, having stopped working full-time, belongs far away from the action in a sleepy, country town. But baby boomers, already becoming the "new retired," certainly don't accept this simplification. And already, on the streets of the nation's metropolitan areas, the number of 50+ and 60+ residents is increasing.

Mature market consumers, especially the more affluent, continue visiting cities to take advantage of cultural and culinary offerings – as they have always done. But more of them now want to make the move into cities permanently. Urban life entails several obvious advantages: apartments are smaller and don't require groundskeeping; proximity to restaurants, museums, theatres and the like makes enjoying their fare easier, and living near a pulsing center of business and creativity makes many feel younger and more alive. In fact, no lesser authority than the United Hospital Fund has declared the city "a good place to grow old."  Deeply rooted communities, with full social calendars and plenty of neighbors close by, give outgoing mature people the best advantages of retirement communities – without the often unwelcome sense of being relegated to a segregated realm only for the elderly. Also, many feel that a better selection of more advanced healthcare facilities gives them a greater sense of security that they will be well looked after when problems arise. Experts on urban development and trends cite the revitalization of many cities' downtown areas, and say this process has been driven by influxes of empty nesters as much as by young professionals as by recent college graduates. Many of the former group say they are particularly attracted to that blend of age groups, as well as cultures and ethnicities, that's difficult to come by in suburbs or rural areas. And this revitalization, in turn, makes more urban areas appealing to the newly- or soon-to-be-retired.

The Sun Belt – traditional destination of Americans in retirement – simply does not offer enough options for sophisticated retirees, and this group will soon include many baby boomers.  For these lively seniors, choosing an urban dwelling means built-in activity and bustle, ingredients they consider priorities for a happy retirement.
