Types of E-Marketing - SMS Messaging

The rise of cell phones gives businesses and marketing professionals a whole new means of reaching target market consumers. SMS messages get the message to your target market quickly and succinctly, and what's more, they are likely to pay attention!

E-marketing - or using internet, cellular phone and other types of communication technologies to connect with a target market - grants companies great versatility. Companies have a wide variety of e-marketing options at their disposal, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Marketing professionals will find their optimum strategy likely is a blended approach, combining different types of communications based on which is most appropriate for the situation.

Text, or SMS (Short Messaging Service), messages are the short written communications people can send from their cell phones. With approximately 70% of U.S. households now laying claim to at least one cellphone, and cellphone-only households now estimated at upwards of 7%, cells are becoming one of the most powerful ways of reaching people. Most people who own them take them everywhere, meaning they can be very useful for time-sensitive messages to your target market: for example, a reminder that a certain offer finishes on a certain date.

Messages must be brief, however, since SMS only allows messages up to 160 characters. Interestingly, people tend to read virtually every text they get - unlike junk mail, e-mail spam or advertisements, all of which can be, and often are, easily ignored. Even when people delete text messages without responding to them, they tend to find them less intrusive than almost any other form of mass communication. On the other hand, this may simply be because SMS spam remains relatively light. Text message e-marketing should proceed with caution, only contacting target market consumers who have expressly agreed to receive messages. Also be sure to state clearly that the message is from a legitimate company. Some text message scams have made phone users wary of responding to SMS.

Because it's not practical to send out text messages one at a time, you will need to employ an agency to send out the texts for you. The development of 3G and smartphones, which have larger screens and can play music and video clips, has made MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) possible. In future, companies will be able to send much richer, more interesting messages by phone.
